The only effective way to stop smoking is cold turkey way. But don't get frightened! Is much more easier than you think... but although you are going to pass from x cigarettes (let's say 12, 20, 40 or 60) to zero, that doesn't mean that you are going to do it senseless and without a preparation.
The first step is to choose a date. This is a personal decision. It can be tomorrow or in 15 days. You can even, if you are anxious enough to begin as soon as possible, bring the date forward but, please, don't delay it. If you delay the date this time you may be delaying it all your life and never stop smoking. For example, I chose the broadcasting date of the quit smoking TV show witch I spoke in chapter 3.
The days before quitting smoking you must realize that you really don't enjoy the tobacco. Look at non-smoking people and see that they can do and enjoy anything without the need for nicotine. Watch TV or cinema and look at non-smoking characters. You will discover that they may look sophisticated and self-confident without a cigarette in their hands. Look at smoking characters as weak people who needs to have a simple cylinder in their hands and throw smoke by their mouths to look harder or interesting. Look this as the stupid looking (and damaging) habit really it is.
Relearn to do every task without the need for a support. Accustom yourself to do your daily routines without tobacco. You can avoid the “type machine cigarette syndrome” if you just do your work, remembering that when you were a non-smoker you could do it perfectly and without the need for help and relearning and accustoming your brain to the new way of work without tobacco.
Now you are ready for one important day in your life: the D-Day or the day you stopped smoking sucessfully!
